Amanda N.

Hi my name is Amanda. I love to read. I repeat, I love to read. When I get home I go straight to the books not the TV. My most very very very favorite type of book is (suspensing music here) Mystery’s! I like them because they keep you thinking. Sometimes I start thinking about a book I’m reading and I don’t even know it. Mysteries are fun to figure out.

The last mystery I solved was in a series called The Land of Eylon Series. Book 1: T he Dark Hills Divide. The second book is Beyond The Valley of Thorns. The third book is The Tenth City. I was so sad when I finished reading the last book. I tried to email the author and tell him to write more and fast. The squirrel Murphy was hyper like Hamie the squirrel, Yipes the short guy, Worvald the city’s wise man, Alexa the main character. They keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. When an important character in the book dies I almost cried it is funny, scary, sad, and most of all happy. Alexa the girl in the book wanted a way outside the wall. When she found one she ventured out and found out she was glad to have the great walls of Bridwell around her.. She sets out on a dangerous journey but will she make it home safely. Find out for yourself. Follow Alexa through the dangerous journey in first The Dark Hills Divide THEN The Valley Of Thorns LAST BUT NOT LEAST The Tenth City.

This year I really want to make the 20 book deadline for the Mark Twain Books. I did it last year. It was so fun. I loved it. All the books were so good. If I don’t make the deadline I will still read the whole list and take the quizzes. All the books look fun to read and I am itching to read them all. I am so going to read them all. Last year I would read all night long just to figure out the end of a book. I do that pretty often. I turned down seeing Pirates Of The Caribbean because I was reading a Mark Twain book. I finally got to see it. So I am pumped about Mark Twain books.

Barret, Tracy On Etruscan Time New York Henry Holt 2005
Hello again. I am here to tell you about a book called On Etruscan time. It is fiction. It is about a boy named who Hector spends his summer at an archaeologist dig. ‘Ector the leader of the dig said the dig was going to close in a couple of weeks if they didn’t find something good soon. He feels as if no one listens to him except an Etruscan boy named Arath. When Hector finds a weird eye shaped rock he starts to have weird dreams about Arath. Arath asked Hector to help him. When Hector finds out Arath is supposed to be killed he will do everything in his power to stop it. Will he save Arath and the archaeological dig?
My favorite part is when Hector finds the weird eye. I liked it because Hector never stopped believing that it was Etruscan through out the whole book. When he finds out it is he is so very happy. Can you see why I want you to read this book? A boy and his determination to save Arath while trying to be heard by his mother ‘Ector and Susan.
When Hector is fighting for Arath’s life I just felt so very, very………………..well Scared. I felt if Arath died what was the point of finishing the book but but but it is a good book so I might as well finish it anyway. So I did and it has a surprise at the end.

Wilson, Diane. Black Storm Coming. New York: Aladdin Paperbacks, 2005.
It’s me Amanda again. You’ll hear from me a lot this year. My book is called Black Storm Coming. It is historical fiction. This book is about life in the 1860s. Colton Westcott a 12 year old boy and his family are traveling from Missouri to California with a wagon train one day his dad accidentally shot his son (Colton) and galloped off to leave them to suffer. When Colton’s Ma falls sick they need to find a doctor… but there isn’t one in miles … until a small town appears. He gets his ma a doctor then…I know what you’re thinking “what did he do now” but he did something I would never have the courage to do. “NO Colton you are not going to sign up for the Pony Express it’s too dangerous” said Althea. “See what I mean courage. Got to love it. Back to the story and skip ahead a bit.” Colton stood in front of the pony express office begging for the job but Mr. Roberts refused to let him have the job. Will Colton prove himself or will he deliver the letter without the pony express…oops I said to much.
One thing I liked is how they made it with only two oxen when they started with four and why would they (other people, Meanies) butcher someone else’s oxen they ( Colton’s family) almost died. Meanies. The reason I like that part is because it shows how much suffering is happening in those times love history.
Another part I like is when Colton meets his ma’s sister. I liked it because it is tragic it is emotional and very very happy.

Smith, Roland. Peak. New York: Scholastic 2007
Genre: Realistic Fiction
This book is 246 pages of joy, tears, pain, and passion. (Peaks passion for climbing. Of course!) When Peak gets in trouble for climbing a blank (can’t tell you. All right fine a Skyscraper) they want to put him in jail. When his dad Josh invited Peak to live with him he doesn’t know what adventure is ahead. Or over his head I should say. His dad thought it would be a good birthday present to let Peak climb Mt. Everest before his birthday.(not really he wanted publicity.) Along the way Peak meets some friends like Sun-jo and Zopa and Holly Will Peak make it 29028 feet up in the air or will he be just another one of those many corpses? Find out!
My favorite part is when they find out Sun-jo is Zopa’s grandson. I like it because it’s emotional, Peak gets mad at Sun-jo because he didn’t tell him. It reminds me of the time my friend Joel told me he would call when he was done eating but he didn’t. I got so mad at him. While Peak was mad at Sun-jo, Sun-jo felt guilty but every thing worked out in the end.
A part I didn’t like is the part where Peak is fighting with Josh. I didn’t like it because I thought the story would end I thought Peak was going home. Turns out he didn’t and I liked that.

Carman, Patrick. Into The Mist. New York:Scholastic,2007.
Genre: Fantasy
Hey I’m back. Remember my intro with The Dark Hills Divide, The Valley of Thorns ,and The t Tenth City. Well I have the forth book in my hand. It is called Into the Mist. I went crazy over getting the 4th book. I got it and it is awesome. It was before Alexa was born. This book tells of 2 brothers Thomas and Roland. Come listen as there tail is told on the Warwick Beakon a ship heading for home or so they say. What will happen in the end you will have to find out for yourself. Learn the secrets they could never tell. Find out what happens on the long journey.
One part I like is when Alexa asks Roland where they are going and he doesn’t give the nod and wink like he always does. It reminds me of when I ask my dad “ Where are we going for dinner tonight.” He always just smiles. We know where we are going any way. It’s like a code between friends. Good friends.
Another part of the book I like is when the door of Wakefeild House falls and Roland and Thomas are forced to run. They thought they had broken it. I was worried they would be sentenced to death then escape.
Hope you check out this book and all the others in this series.
Your hopeful friend
Amanda

Peer didn’t used to live in Troll Fell but he does now. When his dad dies Peer has to live with his Grimmson Uncles, Baldur and Grim. The neighbors Ralf, Gudrun, Eirik (the grand dad, and their three kids own most of Troll Fell…and a golden cup. When Ralf goes a-Viking for the summer the trolls act up. Sorry I forgot to mention the Trolls, if you don’t like Trolls stop reading, but anyway Peer finds out his uncles EVIL plan to sell the neighbor kids to the trolls…for gold…Troll gold…Troll Treasure. One part I like is when Peer meets Granny Green Teeth(the monster in the millpond.) He is trapped but then granny green teeth lets him go back to the mill. She would still wait for him though. Creepy.
Another part I liked was when Grendal, the dog is eaten by the trolls. Grendal is a bad puppy. Mean and gruesome like his owners Baldur and Grim.

Wiles, Deborah. Each Little Bird That Sings. Orlando, Florida: Harcourt publishers, 2005.
Genre: Realistic Fiction.
“I hate Peach, I hate Peach, I hate Peach was all I could write as I sit in my closet. I feel safe in my closet. It’s where I do my best thinking.” Says Comfort Snowberger as she sits in her closet after the viewing of great, great aunt Florentine (her great, great aunt) who died just 6 months after Great Uncle Edisto did. “Peach always messes everything up. I was still in my closet, still mad at Peach” (Peach is her weird cousin.) But what happens when they are in a life or death situation (flash flood.) You will have to find out yourself.
One thing I liked about this book was when Merry called Comfort “Fumfort.” It was just so cute. I love little kids.(Merry is only 3.) I also like how merry sings everything to the tune of jingle bells.
Another thing I liked about this book was when Comfort found Dismay’s (dog) collar by aunt Florentine’s Grave Stone. It was just so sad but at the same time I felt like Dismay would trot up to Comfort any moment. The stuff Comfort goes through is just amazing.
Thanks for listening…or reading I guess,
Amanda

Haddix, Marget Peterson. Double Identity. New York: Simon & Schuster Publishers, 2005
Genre: Science Fiction
““Why does everyone look at me funny” I asked Myrlie. She said nothing for a very long time than said “I promised your dad I would not to tell.”” Bethany has never been out of her parent’s sight besides school. Now she is living with an aunt she never even knew she had while her parents are away and strange things are happening, like everyone seems to know her and when they see her they turn pale and looks like they are going to faint. The worst part is Myrlie won’t tell her a thing about it. But will she like the truth? Well I didn’t so why should she?
One of the coolest parts was when Bethany was on the phone with her mother and her mother said “The doctors say the end isn’t far. But listen, don’t worry. Walter says…your father says…your father said we can get you back” she whispered “If we save some of your cells. It’ll be like you never died at all. An exact copy, isn’t that great. A clone.” Wow!!! How cool would it be to have a clone.
Another cool part was when Bethany’s father sent her a note that said “ He is chasing me, hunting me down. Thought he would stay in jail. I lied to him, Lots of lies. NO REGRETS!!! Lies were the only way to get Bethany. Bethany, Bethany, Bethany…naming her Elizabeth would have been too much like tempting fate. Surely you understand why we chose Bethany-from the Bible.”
See you next time,
Amanda

Smith, Roland. Cryptid Hunters. New York: Hyperion Books, 2005.
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Cryptid means the hidden and they’re looking for Cryptid (hunters.) See perfect sense. This book is about 2 kids who get stranded near Lake Te`le` while trying to save a friend from Noah Blackwood and his men. They have to get to the Skyhouse, a house that will be explained in the book. What happens when Grace gets kidnapped? And who really are Grace’s parents? Surely not who she thinks they are. You can be sure of that. Oh yeah and who is Noah Blackwood really?
One of the funniest/weirdest parts of this book is when Marty is e-mailing his friend and called his principle The Head Nose Picker. It was weird but funny thinking about how much trouble he would be in if the principle found out, and he’s not even at that school anymore. See it’s weird.
The other part I think is weird was when they found the dinosaur eggs by a real live dead dinosaur. Isn’t that weird.
See you later,
Amanda

Well Amanda That story about Cryptid Hunters was as weird as you put it... but I have a pretty good guess that dead dinosaur is a girl... "Just letting you know." You said 1 egg.. I thought there were 2, but one couldn't hatch. But if you do like weird but funny books.. try some CHarlie Bone books. The Time Twister is REALLY good! - Madison
