Brandin S.

Hi my name is Brandin. As a reader I like to read fiction and biography books. The kinds of books that I like to read that go along with fiction and biography are mystery and true telling stories. I like mystery books because I like to solve things and they are easy to read. I like true telling stories because I like to learn what happened in the past.

My favorite book of all time is Harry Potter the Half-Blooded Prince. That’s my favorite book because it’s a mystery and I love books are like this. The best things I like in this book are the characters. My most favorite characters are Harry Potter; He Who must not be Named, Serious Black, Weesly, and Dumbledore, Fudge, Prime Minister, Snape, and The Dark Lord.

My goals as becoming a better reader in fifth grade are getting better at reading bigger and harder books. That way it will get me lost in the book quicker. I also will understand what I am reading at every part of the book. I also want to read books that are like this and read it for the rest of the year. Thank you for reading my Reading Blog.

Rowling, J. K. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, New York: Scholastic , 2005.

Have you ever read Harry Potter and the Half- Blood Prince? It is a fiction book. At the beginning of the book till chapter five at first there were two girls Narcissa and Bella were at the Dark Lord’s favorite student Snape ‘s place. the three of them were talking about Hogwarts and Lord Voldamort. They were all having red wine and talking about Harry Potter the chosen one. Then the two girls left and then Harry Potter was packing his things to leave to Hogwarts. But then he didn’t tell his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia that Dumbledore was coming to talk to him and pick him up, to go to Hogwarts. But thats what Harry thought they were going. But they didn’t and they both apparated. Harry closed his eyes and then he opened them back up and they appeared in front of a house. Then they went in the house and looked around and Dumbledore sat down something that looked like a chair. The thing that Dumbledore thought was a chair said, “ Ouch.” But it wasn’t it was a person named Horace Slughorn. Dumbledore and Horace were talking for a few minutes and Harry didn’t say a word, and Dumbledore offered Horace a job. First he said no then Harry and Dumbledore got up and were about to leave but then Horace finally said yes to the job. After they left Slughorn’s house Dumbledore and Harry apparated again and appaered in the Weasley’s house. So then Dumbledore wanted to talk to Harry in the brick outhouse where the Weasley’s keep their brooms. So that’s how far I’ve gotten in the book.

The part I liked the most was when Dumbledore sat on Slughorn and he said “Ouch.” I thought that, that part was really funny.
The part I didn’t like was at the beginning of the story and it was very boring so didn’t put it in the summary. It was when the Professor and Fudge were talking and they went on and on and on. They were talking about Lord Voldamort at the time.

Brandin: That sounds like an interesting book! I’ve never really been into Harry Potter-I haven’t seen a movie, or I haven’t read a book about him. It does sound good, although I think it’s a little freaky with all the wands, the brooms, the freaky looking glasses that Harry Potter wears… interesting. Have you read the first Harry Potter book? What is it about? I’ll have to try Harry Potter now! - Brittany

Smith, Roland. Peak. Orlando: Harcourt, Ink, c2007, Survival Fiction

A the beginning of the book there was a little kid named Peak. He was at home getting ready to go climb a skyscraper without his parents knowing. After he got done getting ready to climb the skyscraper he went to the skyscraper he had in mind. The skyscraper was about as tall as the clouds. So then he climbed it and got two thirds of the way up and it was getting really cold like it was snowing. So when he got about another fourth of the way up his right side of his face got stuck to the side of the skyscraper. Then he pulled and pulled his face off the wall and when he got his face off the wall his right ear came off of his face. He was bleeding as bad as I was once. So then he grabbed his spray paint out of his backpack and spray painted the window of the skyscraper. After he did that the cops came right beside the skyscraper and picked him up and he went to the police hospital and got stitches to put his ear back on. After he got his stitches he went the police station and they asked him a few questions. Then his mom came and they asked her if her and his dad knew about the skyscraper climbing. But then Peak said “ That was the only time I have did it.” But the swat team said “We have other pictures of you climbing other skyscrapers so you will be in the slammer for two months.

I liked the part when he was climbing the skyscraper because I have had experience with climbing little mountains but it wasn’t cold when I did it. It was one of the coolest things to do.
I didn’t like the part when Peak lost his ear from it sticking to the window because it sounded really nasty and I have lost a lot of skin and bleeding a lot by slipping at my babysitters house. It was one of worst things that has happened to me. But when I lost all of that skin I didn’t cry. That was the good part.

Rowling, J. K. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, New York: Scholastic , 2005.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a wizard fiction book. It is six hundred fifty two pages long. On my first post in my summary it ended at the brick outhouse where the Weasly’s keep their brooms. From there I have read a lot more of that book. After Dumbledore talked to Harry in the brick outhouse Dumbledore took Harry to the front door and they knocked on the door. Mrs. Weasly answered the door and and Dumbledore and Harry walked in the house and Dumbledore talkedto Mrs. Weasly about when the owls will come and give them their grades from the Order of the Phoenix. Then after Dumbledore talked to Mrs. Weasly she asked Harry if he was hungry and he was. At that time everyone was in bed because it was really late. So Mrs. Weasly got out her wand and got out a bowl and got out some vegetable soup and poured it into the bowl and made it hot and set it in front of Harry. Harry said “ Where is Mr. Weasly?” Mrs. Weasly said “ He’s at his work and he will be here shortly.”Then a few moments later someone knocked on the door. Mr. Weasly was home and and Mrs. Weasly almost opened the door but then Mr. Weasly said “ Let’s do our secret sentence.” Mrs. Weasly said “ You’re finally home honeybunch.” Mr. Weasly said “my turn.” But Mrs. Weasly interrupted and said “say it quietly.” And he said “ I’m finally home honey bunny.” And Mrs. Weasly opened the door and Mr. Weasly came inside. Then Harry was all done with his soup and he said “ Goodnight to the both of them.” And he went upstairs to where Ron and Herminie were. The next morning late in the morning Ron woke him up and gave him his breakfast. So then he ate his breakfast and the three of them were talking about Lord Voldamort and when they were all going to get their owls and their grades from Order of the Phoenix. Just a few moments later they all went downstairs to look out the window for their owls. They were looking out the window for about four or five minutes and they went to sit on the stairs, their owls came right after they turned their backs. Harry picked up his grades first. grades went like this,
Astronomy
[A] Acceptable
Care of Magical Creatures
[E] Exeeds Expectations
Charms [E] Exeeds Expectations
Defense Against the Dark Arts [O] Outstanding
Divination [P] Poor
Herbology [E] Exeeds Expectations
History of Magic [D] Dreadful
Potions [E] Exeeds Expectations
Transfiguration [E] Exeeds Expectations
Herminie’s were like this,
Astronomy
[O] Outstanding
Care of Magical Creatures
[O] Outstanding
Charms [O] Outstanding
Defense Against the Dark Arts
[O] Outstanding
Divination [O] Outstanding
Herbology [O] Outstanding
History of Magic [O] Outstanding
Potions
[O] Outstanding
Transfiguration [O] Outstanding
When I was reading J. K. Rowling didn’t tell me Ron’s grades. But she did tell me that he wasn’t happy with his grades. That was as much as I had read from the first post.

The part I liked the most in the book was when Harry, Ron, and Herminie got their mail from an owl. I liked that part the most because I love to get the mail and see what we got. It would also be cool to have an owl fly into your house and give your mail and you take it from it.
I didn’t like the part when they got their grades because I am really kind of scared to see what grade I got on each subject. But is also good to get them to see what you have so you will know if have any missing assignments.

Rowling, J. K. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, New York: Scholastic , 2005.

Genre: Fantasy

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is six hundred and fifty two pages long. For my post I am going to start from the beginning of the book. At the beginning of the book it all started on chapter 1 The Other Minister. Fudge and Dumbledore were arguing about what to do with the teachers for that year it was rally boring. That is why I am not going to talk about it as much. Then on chapter 2 The Spinners End Bellatrix and Narcissa were talking to Snape about Harry Potter the chosen one. Then on chapter 3 Will and Won’t Scrimigour succeeded fudge into the Hogwarts teaching. Then on chapter 4 Horace Slughorn Dumbledore came to Harry’s Aunt and Uncle’s house to pick him up to go to Ron’s house. So after Dumbledore got done talking to Harry’s Aunt and Uncle Dumbledore took Harry and they both apparated to Horace Slughorn’s house. So Dumbledore was talking to Horace and he asked him if he wanted to teach at Hogwarts again. So at first he said no. Then when Dumbledore and Harry started to walk down the sidewalk Horace finally said yes he would. Then on chapter 5 An Excess to Phlegm Harry finally arrived at Ron’s house. When Harry was in the house he had a bowl of vegetable soup. When he was eating the soup Mr. Weasly arrived at the house. Then on chapter 6 Draco’s Detour Harry, Ron, and Herminie were getting ready to leave with Dumbledore to go to Hogwarts. When they got to Hogwarts they walked arond to see what had changed and what hadn’t changed. Then on chapter 7 The Slug Club every student had a meeting with Horace Slughorn. It was actually really boring when I read that chapter. On chapter 8 Snape Victorious, Harry was suposed to meet with Harry and Dumbledore came in and the three of them talked and Snape was able to teach whatever class he wanted. Last on chapter 9 The Half-Blood Prince the chapter I am currently reading, on this chapter they will announce who is the Half-Blood Prince. But right now Harry was in Snape’s class, and he was suppose to read his partners mind with his wand and jinx him(Her). But Harry used a spell from his spell book and got detention. And that was as much as I’ve read so far.

The part I liked the most was when Mr. Weasly came home. And this is what happened, “What is your dearest ambition?” Mrs. Weasly asked. “To find out how airplanes stay up.” Mr. Weasly said. “What do you like to call me when we’re alone together?” Mr. Weasly asked. “Mollywobbles” whispered a mortified Mrs. Weasly into the crack at the edge of the door. That was my favorite part in the book because I’ve never heard of that name before for a nickname. And that nickname was very funny.

I didn’t like the part when Snape said, “ You’re going to detention Harry.” I didn’t like that part because I thought that was really mean of Snape because all Harry did was do a spell from his spell book on accident. I also wouldn’t like to go to detention just for that if I was Harry.

Smith, Roland. Elephant Run. New York: Hyperion Books For Children, 2007.
Genre: Historical Fiction
Have you read Elephant Run? If you have you don’t have to read it. If you haven’t you should. The story starts out like this. In the book a boy named Nick that travel from England to Burma. His mother thinks she is sending him to a safer place, since their place in London had just been bombed. Little did anyone know that Burma will soon also be under siege!
The part I liked the most was when Nang said, “ What about Indaw?” I liked that part the most because I thought it was really funny. I thought it was really funny because I’ve never heard in-law sound that way.
The part I didn’t like the most was when Magwe said, “And if the defenses fail. What then?” I didn’t like that part the most because we were in war I wouldn’t like to die very quickly. It also wouldn’t be good to die at a young age.

Smith, Roland. Zach’s Lie. New York: Scholastic,2001

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Have you ever read Zach’s Lie? Well you should because this book is the best book I have ever read. This book is about a boy named Jack. His name is Jack because that is his real name. Anyway Jacks’ dad goes to jail in the beginning of the book for murder. So then after Jack finds out he has to change his name and move in with his grandma and grandpa. But Jack has to change his name to Zach. So he gets mad because he didn’t get to pick his own name because his sister gets to change her name to whatever she wants. But when the three of them including Zach’s mom. But that night there was some burglar’s breaking in Zach was very scared. One burglar went up to Zach’s room and taped his hands together and taped his mouth shut. And that is how much I’ve read.

The part I liked the most was when Zach said this, “What, I can’t pick my own name. Well that is not fair.” I liked that part the most because I thought it was pretty funny.

The part I didn’t like at all was when the burglar said to repeat for the mom, “If you talk we will die.” I didn’t like that part at all because I wouldn’t like to die if I talked.

Smith, Roland. Zach’s Lie. New York: Scholastic,2001

Genre: Realistic Fiction

From my last post Zach, Joanne and their mother went to the jail to talk to their dad. After Zach’s mom talked to her husband Zach could tell that she had been crying. The very next morning Agent Pelton rang the doorbell at 3 A.M. to talk to Zach’s mom about her husbands inicants. The next day Zach said that they were being kept like prisoners in their new hotel. And that is how far I’ve gotten so far.

I liked the part when “Agent Pelton came to Zach’s house at three in the morning.” I liked that part because he is just like me I also stay up until three in the morning.

However I didn’t like that “Agent Pelton came to Zach’s house at three in the morning.” Because Zach’s mom lost a lot of sleep waking up that early. Just like me.

Smith, Roland. Jack’s Run. New York City: 2005

Genre: Realistic Fiction

In Jack’s Run it all started when from the first book his name was Zach. Now he changed it to Mack. It all started when Mack was sleeping in his house and all of a sudden the phone rang. Mack let it ring almost ten times before he picked the phone. When he picked up the phone it was he Aunt Doris. First they were talking about how Mack’s dad was doing in prison. Since he was in there for such a long time. Then they were talking about how good they were in their new house in Los Angeles. And that was how far I’ve gotten so far.

I didn’t like the part when Mack didn’t pick the phone up because Aunt Doris said “Your dad isn’t doing so well.” I didn’t like it because I wouldn’t like someone to say my dad wasn’t doing well.

However I did like the part when Mack said “Is the person who is trying to call ever going to hang up.” I liked that part because he is sort of like me sometimes.

Hahn, Mary. The Doll in the Garden. New York City: 2007

Genre: Mystery

Ashley Cummings is happy to leave Baltimore and the sad memories it holds for her and her widowed mom. But there something strange about her new house. Every night she hears a girl crying outside in the darkness. But when one night Ashley and her friend go outside and they find a doll in the garden. But seventy years ago a young woman owned that doll at that same house. So before she died she put the doll in the garden.

My most favorite part in the book was when they found the doll and Ashley said, “Oh my gosh that doll is so nasty looking.” That was my most favorite part because it was so funny.

The part I didn’t like was when read the seventy year olds crying, “Whoo hoo!” I didn’t like that part because the dead seventy year old really wanted to find her doll.

Clements, Andrew. Frindle. New York City: 1996

Genre: Realistic Fiction

I bet you are wondering why the books’ title is Frindle. Well it all started with a boy named Nick. He was in womans’ classroom in fifth grade, Mrs. Granger. Well Nick got annoyed of Mrs. Granger because she was so boring when she taught. So he made up a word: Frindle. Every time Mrs. Granger was teaching Nick was whispering to his friends about his new word frindle. Frindle replaced the word pen.

The part in the story I like the most was when the whole class said, “Frindle!” Instead of cheese when they were taking a picture. But when they took the class picture they all held up frindles. (pens)

The part I didn’t like was when Nick said, “Oh man!” because he had to take a dictionary home that was three inches thick and he had to study words that were in the dictionary. I didn’t like that part because I wouldn’t like that part because I wouldn’t like to study words out of a three inches thick dictionary.
