Marressa S.

Hey, my name is Marressa. I love to read mystery books. As I am reading mystery books, I try to solve the mystery. It makes reading have more fun to it. There really fun to try to solve. That is why I love mystery books so much. I do not like history books at all, for example history for government, and presidents. I just do not like those books, because to me there are boring.

My favorite book of all times is There’s a Boy in the Girls Bathroom. It is my favorite, because it is about a boy that has a lot of problems, and is really confused. Sometimes that happens to me, and I understand how he feels. So the reason why I really like this book is it tells some things about me. I like that, because I know what he is going through, so I can understand the story much, much, much better.

The goal this year that I would like to accomplish is to read more. The only time I read is when it is D.E.A.R. time, and that is at school. I would like to read more so that I can check out a lot more books to read. So I can read more and more great books. I really do love to read. I have a lot of friends to play with, and I’m trying to read more so bad.

Stoker, Bram. Dracula, New York: Random House, 1982
Jonathan Harker was a lawyer. He was very sad, because he had to leave his wife for two weeks. Jonathan had to give Count Dracula release papers for his new house. Mr. Hawkins is Jonathan’s boss. Mr. Hawkins wrote a letter talking about Jonathan, and saying that Jonathan would follow Count’s wishes. Count told Jonathan that Jonathan would have to say at his house for a month. Jonathan missed his wife so much, he couldn’t stay. He had to though. His boss said he had to follow Count’s wishes he, also could not leave because everyday Count would lock the doors, and would not let Jonathan leave. Mean while his wife, Mina, was waiting for her friend, Lucy, to get better. For Lucy was bitten, and was turning into a vampire. Will Jonathan get out of Count’s Castle before turning into a vampire, also will Jonathan’s wife, Mina, get bitten next by her friend or Count? You will have to read the book to find it out. This book is fiction. My favorite part of the book is when they killed Dracula. The reason why is because now everybody is safe, and nobody has to turn into a vampire. Jonathan and Vanhelsing went up to the carriage, and opened up Dracula’s coffin and stuck a sharp cross in Dracula. After they put the cross in Dracula, Dracula died.
The part I do not like in the book is when he finally killed Lucy, and Lucy’s mother. Dracula turned into a wolf and crashed through Lucy’s window. He frightened Lucy’s mother so much that Lucy’s mother finally just gave up, and passed away. Dracula finally drank to much blood from Lucy that Lucy had no blood, so Lucy died.

Stine, R.L, Welcome to Dead House, New York, Scholastic, 1992
Hannah and her brother Josh moved into a new house. When they moved in they found some new friends. They did not know though that those kids needed new flesh to eat off of. Hannah and Josh would not let the kids eat them. So the kid’s took Hannah and Josh’s parents. Will they survive from the kid’s of dead house? You will have to read the book. This book is Fiction Fantasy.
My favorite part is when Hannah and Josh killed one of the kids. They shined light on him and he died, and what was left of him was dust.
Not my favorite part was when one of the kids tried to kill Hannah. They were chocking her.

Kehret, Peg. Abduction. New York: Puffin Books, 2004.
Genre: Realistic Fiction, Mystery
I labeled this realistic fiction, because in the story a dad steals his son. That could really happen, but it is still not real. Also I labeled it mystery because there are trying to find the son that the dad stole.
Bonnie’s brother, Matt, was at his school about to use the restroom as his dad Danny was disguised as a UPS person delivering a package. He went down to the kindergarten hallway and tricked Matt in his car and said that Matt’s mom and his sister Bonnie had died in a car accident, and that Danny was supposed to take care of Matt. Bonnie and her mother didn’t die. Now the police are looking all over for Matt. You will have to see if Matt ever gets found in Abduction.

The part I did not like the most was when Matt got stolen by his father. I wish Matt would not be stolen so he could just be at home safe and sound. “I was coming to get you out of class,” Denny said. “You’re supposed to come with me. Right now.”

Brinson, Cynthia. Seeing Sugar. New York: Penguin Young Readers Group, 2003.

The Genre is Realistic Fiction.

It is Realistic fiction because anyone can be jealous of a new student.

Kate Martin loves fourth grade, but on Tuesday everything changed. That is when Sugar Rose Simms came from Georgia to transfer to Maple Woods Elementary School. Sugar had beautiful caramel hair, a voice that sounded like a bird’s peep, and a Barbie nose. All of a sudden Kate’s teacher was only paying attention to Sugar Rose. It was like Kate was not there. Now Kate hates fourth grade and Sugar Rose. Will Kate ever love fourth grade again, and later on in the year will Kate become friends with Sugar Rose. You will have to find out in Seeing Sugar.

The part I do not like in this book is when Kate yelled at Sugar, I did not like it because Kate should not be mean, Sugar Rose was just trying to give Kate’s book back. “That was my seat,” she fired. “Why don’t you go back to Georgia?”.

Hey Marresa, I would agree with you that it’s mean to be yelling at someone that you don’t even know well enough. You did great on your post! I’ve read that book before but I didn’t finish it, I think that I only got to chapter 2. Well keep reading and find out if Kate becomes friends with Sugar.

Dicamillo, Kate. The Tale of Despereaux. New York: Scholastic, 2003.

Genre: Fantasy

I labeled this fantasy, because it has talking mice.

There are four stories in The Tales of Despereaux.

Book 1: There was this mouse named Despereaux. He was not like the other mice, he would read and stare out the window for the longest time. The worst thing he did was let a human being touch him. Since he was not like the other mice he was sent to the dungeon. In the dungeon there are rats. Rats eat mice. Will Despereaux survive from the dungeon? You will have to see in The Tale of Despereaux.

Book 2: There was a rat named Roscuro. He was not like the other rats. Just like Despereaux is not like the other mice. Rats hate the light, but Roscuro thinks it is wonderful. The dungeon is very dark. So to see the wonderful light Roscuro went up stairs. Up stairs the king, queen, and princess lives there. By accident he kills the Queen by making her choke on soup. Will this be the end of Roscuro’s life?

Book 3: Miggery Sow’s farther sold her to a man. For a tablecloth, a hen, and a handful of cigarettes. Mig was supposed to call the man Uncle that she was sold to. Since Roscuro killed the queen, the king outlawed soup, bowls, and spoons. So one day a knight came by to gather Mig’s and Uncle’s soup, bowl’s, and spoons. Uncle told the knight what are my girl I own and I going to eat. The knight told him that you can not own somebody. So the knight took Uncle’s soup, bowls, spoon, and Mig to the castle. What is going to happen to Mig? To find out you Have to read The Tale of Despereaux.

Book 4: In the fourth book it is the following tales of Miggery Sow, Despereax, and Roscuro.

The part I do not like the most is when Miggery Sow was sold to a man. I think that is not right. Your own daughter is more important than a red tablecloth, a hen, and a handful of cigarettes. “Lord child,” her farther said, “and who is asking you what you want? Go on now.” He untangled her fingers from the cloth and turned her in the direction of the man who had bought her.

Marressa- I read Seeing Sugar when I was either in third grade or fourth grade, or really wanted to read it. I can't remember if I did or not!It sounded really interesting! Is it a good book? It sounds like one! I'm currently reading First Boy. Cooper has seen some strange happenings on his farm. The "Big Barn" was set on fire, and some "Very Big Men" broke into his house, asking for his birth certificate. I don't know why, but I'm dying to find out why! First Boy is a Mark Twain award nominee, and it's a really good book!-Brittany HOF'07

Hey Marressa,
It’s Johnna. Seeing Sugar sounds so good! You used awesome word choice. Have you read The Naked Mole Rat Letters? If not you totally should. I loved it! It is kind of a cross between email and the actual story. I don’t want to give away to much just in case you haven’t read it but the main plot of the book is Frankie’s dad went on a trip and met a Naked Mole Rat keeper. Now Frankie’s dad and “Rat lady” as Frankie calls her are emailing constantly. Well I have go to go!
Happy Reading

Marressa, I read that same book (There’s a boy in the girls bathroom) in 4th grade. When we did the power point in 4th grade I used the picture you had Mrs. Schneider take of that book. I loved it. It was Hilarious. Don’t you think? When all the girls scream and push the guys out is my favorite part. Is it yours too? Bye, Amanda.

Marressa you sound so enthusiastic about Seeing Sugar. It’s like you had 5 cans of mountain dew. The book really wasn’t what I expected from reading the title. If there’s a holding list, sign me up. I really am waiting to see what happens to Kate and Sugar, but why is it called Seeing Sugar?

I love that book! “ The tale of Desperuax” I like the part when he gets thrown in to the dungon and he is willing to take the risk to be eating by rats just to see Princess Pea again. And it’s sort of funny when a mouse falls in love with a princess.

Dicks, Terrance. Teacher’s pet. New York: Scholastic, 1990.

Genre: Realistic Fiction

It is realistic fiction, because anybody can have their teacher retire.

David’s worst subject is math. He does not like it at all. When David first went to Mr. Paine’s class for math it was so hard at first, but then it got easier. David is really good at it now. Then something bad happens. Mr. Paine is retiring. So David puts together his whole class, and they fight back to get Mr. Paine not to retire. Will Mr. Paine not retire? You will have to read this book.

The part I do not like in the story is when Mr. Paine retires, because if he does then David might be bad at math again. “I wish to thank you-well, most of you-for all your hard work, and say goodbye. I have decided to take early retirement and will not be returning to school next term.”

Kristin, Kemp. Genny in a Bottle. New York: Scholastic, 2001.

Genre: Fantasy

This is fantasy, because it has genies in it talking, and having powers.

Sophie’s sister got all the attention. So Sophie got a genie named Genny. Sophie finally got all the attention. She got from the help of Genny. See Sophie was really good at the piccolo. She was so two good that she got in the finals with eighth graders. Guess what. Sophie won! All the attention got on Sophie. Until Sophie’s sister ruined it with the help of Sophie’s sister’s genie. Will Sophie get her attention back? Also will her sister always have the attention now?

The part I do not like in the book is when Sophie’s sister gets a genie. If Sophie’s sister didn’t Sophie would still have all the attention. I was crying and upset when I found this neat bottle that looked like it was from Target sitting on my desk. I picked it up and pocked around. I rubbed it three times-and poof! “Hey babycakes! What’s shakin’?” this girl with a southern drawl said.

Worth, Bonnie. Full House, Kiss A Frog Princess. New York: Parachute Press,1992.
Genre: realistic fiction.

I labeled this realistic fiction, because having a rock star coming to your birthday party can happen.

It was Stephanie Tanner’s tenth birthday party. Tommy Weaver was coming to Stephanie’s party to sing for her. Tommy Weaver was the number one hottest rock star on the charts. Tommy sang Stephanie a love song that he had made up. The song was not for Stephanie though. It was for Tommy’s girlfriend. He just changed the Melanie to Stephanie. So because of that song Stephanie thought her and Tommy Weaver were in love. What Stephanie did not know was that Tommy asked D.J., Stephanie’s sister, to show him around San Francisco. After that Tommy gave D.J. a kiss on the check. Who is Tommy going to pick?

The part I do not like is when Tommy kissed D.J. on the cheek! If it was not for that kiss everything would have been perfect. [Stephanie stared as Tommy leaned over and kissed D.J. on the cheek.]

Worth, Bonnie. Full House, Way to go Chipmunk Cheeks. New York: Parachute Press, 1991.

Genre: Realistic Fiction

I labeled this realistic fiction because any body can want to go on a diet.

D.J. Tanner was making a collage for her best friend’s birthday present. It so happens that there her best friend was rushing right to her. Kimmy Gibbler was D.J. Tanner’s best friend. She had just told her great news that she was going to have her birthday party at a hotel in a swimming pool area where cute guys are going to be. D.J. said she was not going to go swimming unless she lost a lot of weight. So D.J. went on a crash diet. One day on one of her crash diet days D.J. and her family went to the gym. D.J. had to much exercise and fainted. Is D.J. going to be ok? Will she continue on with her diet? Will she still go to the birthday party?

The part I do not like the most is when D.J. went on her diet. It wouldn’t have caused her fainting and getting embarrassed of everyone in the gym. [Stephanie’s smile faded. D.J. didn’t look to good. In fact, she looked kind of sick. Before Stephanie could say anything, D.J. collapsed like a rag doll down onto the stairs. The machine ground to a halt. Stephanie screamed.]

Marressa, you and me have read a lot of the same books. But I bet I’ve read a book you haven’t read. Have you read Black Storm Coming. It is a Mark Twain nominee. A really good book. If you read that I bet you haven’t read Double Identity. Another good book.
