Nick H.

Hi my name is Nicholas I like to read adventure books because I like to picture myself traveling where the book is. I also like to read mystery books because I like to get the feeling that something weird is going to happen. I don’t like to read joke books because they are too short for me to read. I’ll read some poetry. I like to read fiction books because I like to read made up things, I’ll read some non-fiction but I would rather read fiction. I also like to read history because I like to feel like I am in the olden days.

My favorite book of all time would be Monsters of Morley Manor. I like this book because it is part mystery, part fantasy, and part adventure. The story is about 5 people that get shrunk into monsters and frozen by Gaspers (brother) My favorite character would be Gasper because he is a scientist. I also like Bob because he is one of the funniest characters in the book because he can not do anything since he’s a dog.

My reading goals are that I want to read faster than I am right now. I also want to read huge books that are really big. I hope that I can read at least 40 books this year that are pretty good size chapter books for someone my size. Also, when I am reading out loud I need to read slower because no one can understand me I read so fast. So those are my reading goals for this year.

Hi my name is Nicholas and the book that I am currently reading is Summer of the Sea Serpent. It is a fantasy fiction written by Mary Pope Osborn published in New York by scholastic. It is about two kids named Jack and Annie who solve mysteries, in this book they are sitting on the porch when they see a seagull that flies over their house “But the ocean is about 2 hours away from our house.” said Jack So they decided to follow it and it lead them to the magic tree house so they climbed up the rope ladder. inside they found a beach book so then they go there and they find a riddle that says To begin your quest for the sword of light call for the help of the Water Night. Then pass through the cave of the Spider Queen and swim with a selkie clothed in green. Enter the cove of the Stormy Coast dive under the Cloak of the old gray ghost So then they set out their journey. Along the way they meet the water night at first they don’t know that it is him but then they find out that it is him. Then they find the selkie that is really a long story but I can tell you that the selkie is a girl because at the beginning it is hard to understand. Then they get to the cave of the Spider Queen and in there lay the Spider Queen she was a big fat spider about the size of a car really big!! After that they have to go to the Stormy Coast. But then a big Sea Serpent jumps in front of them and so you will have to read the book to find out the ending.

I like you post. Summer of the Sea Serpent sounds like something I want to read. I like how the Beach Book is like a book book of peoms! Moslty cause I like to read and write poems. Though I don't like how the poems don't really make sence. With a selkie clothed in green?

I used to read the Magic Tree House books all the time! This one sounds really interesting, and it’s one of the newer ones! I haven’t read one of the newer ones yet, but I am reading the Mark Twain book nominees! I’m currently reading Shakespeare’s Secret, which is really good! I think you would like it, since it’s kind of a mystery, kind of like the Magic Tree House books. I really like mysteries! What kind of books do you like?

Hi my name is Nicholas and the book that I am currently reading is Night of the New Magicians. It was written by Mary Pope Osborn published in New York by Random House Inc. It was made in 2006 and it is Fantasy Fiction. In this book Jack is sitting in the house reading a book when Annie runs in the room and says that they can go get some ice cream. So then Jack gets up to go get ice cream with Annie when they notice that a second ago there were crickets chirping and now there isn’t any chirping. “do you think it’s back” asked Annie “I don’t know” said Jack. So then they went into the Frog Creek Woods and went to the biggest Oak tree and climbed up the rope ladder until they got into the tree house. When they got in there they found a book called Paris Worlds Fair 1889. They opened it up to a picture of Paris only it looked different. They also found a riddle that said that there are 4 magicians they were the magician of sound his voice can be heard for miles. The magician of light his firers glow but do not burn. The magician of invisible who fights enemies no one can see. The magician of iron he bends metals of the earth and triumphs over the wind. So then they went there and found out that there was a evil sorcerer that is trying to kill the magicians. So they had to warn the magicians before the evil sorcerer did. So they are trying to get to the magicians before he does and they do not have much luck with that because they kept getting there to late. So they find out that the sorcerer is going to kill them at the Eiffel Tower so then they had to get as fast as they could and they get there and they try to tell the magicians about the sorcerer when the door opens and there is the sorcerer. So you will have to read the book to here the ending!!

My favorite part was when they are in the crowd trying to find the magicians because they are trying to ask people directions and no one is listing to them.

One part that I did not like was at the beginning because there was nothing good happening all that was happening was that they were in there house reading and then they talked a little but that was it.

Smith, Roland, Cryptid Hunters. New York: Hyperion paperbacks for children, 2005
Hi my name is Nicholas and the book that I am currently reading is called Cryptid Hunters. It is a Fantasy Fiction book. It is about two kids whose names are Marty and Grace they are exact twins except that one was a boy and one was a girl. One day when they were in class Marty’s teacher burst into his class room and said that the principle wanted to see him. This was not a big thing to him because he usually went to the principles office. On his way he stopped to get a drink, bathroom, and talk to his friends finally he got there. When he walked in he saw that Grace was in there and she never went to the principles office. When the principle saw him he told him that their mom and dad had gotten in a plan crash in the Amazon and no one can find them. Then he told them that they were going to be living with their uncle Wolf. “When you get out of school you will go to the air port and your uncle will pick you up. So finally when school got out they went to the air port when they got there they saw an old man and an old woman holding up a sign that said in big letters WOLF. They went to the couple and said are you uncle wolf “no” said the man “But we work for your uncle” Said the woman. So they all went down to a dock were a plan was they got into the plan and after about an hour they got to their uncle’s island. After they got off of the plan they got into a Hummer that was painted army color they drove up a huge hill until they got to a mansion that was as old as the oldest man (witch is really old). When they get into the house they can’t find their uncle so they decide to look around the house. When they finally find their uncle it is almost 9:00 so they eat dinner that Marty made and then they went to bed. The next morning Marty decides that he wants to go for a walk but in the end he ends up drowning because of a giant monkey. The next morning his uncle and a woman named Dr. Lee told the twins that they were going to the Congo Marty asked if they could go but he said that they could not and that they would go back to their old school. He also said they were going to come back when they get back. So when they were in the plane bringing them to their school the part of the plan3e that they were in fell into the Congo. So their uncle and Dr. Lee had to drop out of the plane and now they are trying to find Marty and Grace. And that’s as far that I have gotten!!

One part that I liked was when they are in the Congo and Marty said, “Why are these gosh darned leaches eating me but not you.”Because how he said it just made me want to laugh.

One part that I did not like was when they were looking for their uncle because there was nothing that good about it if there was action going on then I would of liked it.

Smith, Roland. Elephant Run. New York: Hyperion books for children, 2007.
Hi my name is Nicholas and the book that I have just finished is called Elephant Run. It is a realistic fiction book and a really great book to read!! In this book a boy named Nicholas is living with his mom in London. When they are there, their house is bombed (did I tell you this is taking place in 1942). After that his mom does not think that it is safe for Nick to be in London so he is sent to live with his father in Burma. When he is there he meets a girl named Mya and her brother Indaw. Finally after waiting for about an hour his dad shows up at Hawks Nest (it is where he was born and where his dad lives). Later his dad and Indaw have to leave on an important mission so that leaves Nick and Mya alone. Nick decides that he is going to go for a walk. When he is walking he sees a shadow in the trees and out of the trees came Hannibal. His dad had told him about the elephant he was attacked by a tiger and now he is crazy. He hits Nick backwards when Nick gets up and looks at his ribs it looks like he broke about two or three ribs. When he limped back to Hawks Nest he got into bed to go to sleep. Later that next day Nick, Indaw, Mya, and Nick’s father and a monk named Hilltop ( Which is Mya’s great grandfather) went onto a little trip to another part of the island. Later that afternoon Nick went into a lake to swim when he was in there Japanese took over their camp and took everyone with them. They also took over Hawks Nest when they got out of sight he got out of the water and started to walk to what was left of the camp. Just then a solider came back and grabbed Nick and took Nick with them. They decided that Nick’s father and Indaw would go to a POW camp. Nick and Mya are at Hawks Nest as servants but Hilltop comes up with a plan that might get them Nick’s father and Indaw out. You will have to read the book Elephant Run to find out!!

One of my favorite parts was when Hannibal hit Nick backwards and he said “He is going to either nock me into a tree or he is going to hit me with his tusks.” Because it reminded me of when my sister fell off of a horse and got really hurt.

One part that I did not like was when him and his mom were in London and their house was bombed because all that was happening was that his mom was saying things like “You are going to live with your father” because there was not really much things going on that I would like.

Riordan, Rick. Lightning Thief. New York: Scholastic Inc, 2005.

Hi my name is Nicholas and the book that I have just finished is called The Lighting Thief. It is a Fantasy Fiction book. In this story a boy named Percy Jackson gets kicked out of every school and is about to be kicked out of another one. Until one of the teachers turns into a vampire and tries to eat him!! Later when his mom and he are leaving he finds out that his best friend Grover is a satyr. Then they get attacked by a Minotaur (which is a big man/bull)!! Then when he wakes up he is at a camp called Camp Half-Blood and then he meets a girl named Annabeth. After that they find out that they are supposed to find Zeus’s master bolt. And now Zeus is saying that Poseidon stole it. And so now Percy Jackson has to find the master bolt and give it to Zeus before the gods have World War III. On the way there they run into a lot of trouble like Medusa, a snake lady, and a giant named Crusty. But to find out if they ever get the master bolt you have to read this great book to find out!!

One part that I liked was when Percy is fighting the Minotaur and Grover was hit by it and was laying on the ground saying “Hungry, hungry, hungry!!” And so Percy had to carry him to Camp Half-Blood.

One part that I did not like was when Grover was sitting in the arena watching Percy sword fight with Luke because all that he was saying was “Percy, when can we go.” and because the only other thing that he was doing was eating cans, and I did not really think that there was anything that was interesting and I thought there was nothing really cool to read in that part of the book.

Nick- That sounds like a very good book! I have wanted to read Elephant Run, but it’s hard to find the book. It takes place in World War 2, doesn’t it? I’m currently reading The Lightning Thief, a great book. It’s about Half-Bloods, people that are half human and half animal. It’s part of a series, and The Lightning Thief is also a Mark Twain nominee. I really like this book!-Brittany

Riordan, Rick. The Titan’s Curse. New York: Hyperion books for children, 2007.
Hi my name is Nicholas and the book that I have just finished is called The Titan’s Curse. It is a Fantasy Fiction book, it is about a boy named Percy Jackson who is the son of Poseidon, the sea god. In this book Percy, Thalia, and Annabeth find out that there friend Grover finds two more half-bloods that are twins. So they try to get the half-bloods out of their school but they also find out that one of the teachers is a monster and tries to kill them. But the hunters save them in the nick of time. One of the hunters named Zoë finds out that the god Artemis (the main hunter) is captured and is being made to hold up the sky. So she goes on a quest with five hunters but Percy was not allowed to go because he was a boy and the hunters have to promise not to marry or fall in love with a boy for the rest of your live. But that didn’t stop Percy from going on the trip, he put on Annabeth’s invisible cap but later blew it. They find out that Kronos the evil Titan lord was coming back to live so they had a time limit to save all of Olympian. But on the way a lot of surprising things happen that they though would never happen in their lives. Will they make it, well that is up to you if you want to read this action packed book!!

One part that I liked was when Percy is on his Pegasus Blackjack and Blackjack said “I’m fine boss.. really I am.. but maybe I could have a donut.” Because it reminded me of my sister when I am racing her she will say “I am hungry” and walk off. And that is why I like this part of the book!!

One part that I didn’t like was when they were at camp half-blood and Percy and Thaila (Thaila is the daughter of Zeus) were talking about what they were going to do next because I like to read action in books and in this part of the book there was no action and that is why I didn’t like it.

Nick- I read The Lightning Thief and loved it, so I'll have to read The Titan's Curse. Is it a good book? On a scale of 1-10, what would you rate it? I wonder how many books there are in the series. Do you happen to know? If so, tell me! I'm currently reading Gentle's Holler, and it's a sad story about family. It's one of the Mark Twains. It's about a girl named Livy Two, and her family is poor. She lives in a holler in cabin. She has a big family. One of her younger sisters, Gentle, can't see. This book is very sad!

Riordan, Rick. The Sea of Monsters. New York: Scholastic Inc., 2006.

My name is Nicholas and the book that I am currently reading is called The Sea of Monsters. It is a Fantasy Fiction book about a boy named Percy Jackson who is the son of Poseidon the water god. In this book a magical tree that protects camp Half-Blood from monsters is poisoned. So Percy Jackson and Annabeth the daughter of Athena the god of wisdom and war go out to find a legendary Golden Fleece. They think that it can heel the tree, but on the way they run into Luke one of the gods kids that turned on them. So the have a none stop battle on a ship and on the ship in a casket is Kronose the worst and meanest god that ever and was coming together again piece by piece. To see if Percy Jackson and Annabeth get past Luke and get the Golden Fleece and save camp is up to you so see. So read this really great book!!

One part that I liked was when Percy Jackson was sword fighting with Luke because it was like I really wanted to keep reading it until I found out who won. And because it reminded me of when me and my dad sword fight over at my uncles house.

One part that I did not like was when they were on the ship sailing because it had nothing said in it that grabbed my attention and made me want to read it.

Smith, Roland. Peak. New York: Scholastic Inc., 2007

My name is Nicholas and the book that I am currently reading is called Peak. Peak is a non-fiction book about a boy named Peak who is caught climbing a sky scraper and when the cops see Peak his face is cut up because it froze to the building. The next day Peak is taken to court and is about to be put into prison when his dad comes and takes him to live with him. But Peak does not know that his dad is going to have him climb Mount Everest and be the youngest kid to climb Mount Everest. And when Peak finds out he feels like he would rather be in prison. But he ends up climbing Mount Everest but on the way he meets new friends and there are big surprises on the way that they would not think would be on a Mountain. To see if Peak makes it to the top and is the youngest person to top Mount Everest is up to you so read this awesome book.

One part that I liked was Peaks face when his dad said that he was climbing Mount Everest because it reminded me of me when my parents told me that we were going to Florida.

One part that I did not like was when they were in court because there was nothing caching my attention and it was really boring to me.

Pearson, Ridley. Kingdom Keepers. New York: Page One Inc., 2005.

Hi my name is Nicholas and the book that I am currently reading is called Kingdom Keepers and it is a Fantasy Fiction book. It is about a boy named Finn who sends an application to Walt Disney World and is hired to be a DHI. DHI stands for Disney Holographic Image and it is where they film you walking and talking and then they make exact copies of you as tour guides. Finn was one out of five DHI’s but something really cool happens if you are a DHI, when you go to sleep you end up in the Magic Kingdom. But Finn and the other DHI’s can not play around they have to stop Maleficent from taking over the park and then taking over the world. But they have very little time to stop Maleficent from taking over but they meet a friend named Wayne who was one of the people that took over for Walt Disney. Can they stop Maleficent well, that’s up to you to find out so read this Action Packed book!!

One part that I liked was when Finn was sword fighting with the pirates from Pirates of the Caribbean because it reminded me of when me and my Dad where sword fighting over at my uncles house and because it was grabbing my attention and made me want to read on.

One part that I did not like was at the beginning when Finn and Wayne where talking and first met because they were just telling about themselves to the other and because it did not grab my attention and did not make me want to read on.

DuPRAU, Jeanne. The Prophet of Yonwood. New York: Random House Children Books, 2006.
Hi my name is Nick and the book that I am currently reading is called The Prophet of Yonwood and it is a Realalistic Fiction book. In this book there is a girl named Nickie whose dad is doing work on something that he can not tell anyone about, and her mom works at a business all day. And Nickie’s great, great, great grandfather just died and so Nickie and her aunt Crystal (who takes care of her during the day) are going to Yonwood to sell her grandfathers house. But when they get there Nickie sees a light on in one of the third floor bedrooms, and while she is there she makes herself three goals to reach. 1. Fall in love 2. Save Green haven (which is the house) 3. Do something to help the world. During Nickie’s stay at Greenhaven she does find her great grandfather’s journal witch has a lot of weird things written inside of it. She also meets new friends in Yonwood but her dad also is sending weird notes to Nickie witch she does not understand. To find out what happens next you will have to read this awesome book!!

One thing that I liked about this book was when Nickie meets a boy named Grover because one they meet when Grover’s dad is fixing some of the pipes on Greenhaven. And second is because Grover says to Nickie “No one has ever seen the inside of this apple” and is pretending that he knows everything.

One part that I did not like was every night when Nickie and Crystal are eating dinner because all they do is usually talk about is what to change about the house and nothing about that makes me want to read the book anymore because it does not draw me attention into the book.
