Madison C.

Who likes to read? I know I do. I’m Madison and as a reader, I LOVE TO READ! Some of my favorite books are scary, mystery stories. I really like GooseBumps. I think reading should be about letting the reader get into something he / her might enjoy. Lots of people like fiction. Well, I’m one of them. Some people like non-fiction. These types of books are use for homework or having fun with true facts!

Do you have a favorite book? Cause I have some favorites! It’s the first GooseBumps story I read. It’s called, Say Cheese and Die! It’s a good book about four kids who sneak into an old house, and find a mysteries camera that takes some bad pictures! If you want to know more about it just go visit a library and see if they have any. If they do, remember to tell me!

Do you have any reading goals you have made for yourself? I do! I’m hoping to read at least 30 GooseBumps! In fact I have read so many it feels like I have already done 100! So, how do you feel about reading?

Madison, I enjoyed reading your blog! Did your mother tell you that I now have a blogspot so that the parents of my children can read about what we did all week in preschool? I got that idea from your teacher!! It is so neat to be able to read about your experiences in 5th grade! Keep reading and writing!! Great-grandma Marilyn

Smith, Roland. Cryptid Hunters. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2005.

I’m Madison and I’m reading Cryptid Hunters, it’s a Mark Twain for this year. I like this book because it’s fantasy/fiction. In this story Grace and Marty’s mom and dad go missing. Pilot dead and parents lost, the kids go to their Uncle Wolfe’s house. I like it when they go to their Uncle Wolfe’s house. Because he’s house sounds awesome to live in! I don’t like it when I found out there parents are missing. Mostly because I wouldn’t want my mom and dad lost. It sounds really scary! Will they die? Are there parents’ dead? I don’t know, but you might go on and check it out! Give this book a good read!

Smith, Roland. Jack’s Run. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2005.

I’m Madison and I’m reading Jack’s Run. It’s an awesome Mark Twain this year! In the first book Zach’s Lie his dad is working in business with a man called, Alonzo. There working with drugs, selling them for money. Because of this Zach and his family have to change their looks, move, and start new lives. Jack’s Run is the sequel to Zach’s Lie. I like this book because ‘Jack’ has to try and live with out Alonzo’s goons after him and it’s really, really… scary, awesome, cool, and just plain SWEET! Right now their trying to figure out some things on where his goons are hiding as ‘Jack’ states, “What’s going on with Alonzo?” To me this story is creepier then I thought!!! I L. O. V. E. this book! I just started it but it’s getting good. I think ‘Jack’ might get surprised himself, with what might happen in this book!
I like this book because Jack gets to go on amazing adventures and does stuff that could really happen! I really wish I could go through that thrill…. Will maybe not all the thrill!
I don’t like this book because it’s sometimes hard to follow with all the different characters. Sometimes I get mixed up with the different things going on!

Smith, Roland. Jack’s Run. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2005.

I’m Madison and I’m reading Jack’s Run. I have already read over half the book and I can’t wait to finish! So far Alonzo’s men have kid napped Jack and his sister! There hiding in an old western town called, “The Vineyard” It’s SO good! There in an under ground house behind a locked door! The door is in the back of a horse pen. The horse’s name is “Diablo”. You can tell this isn’t pretty. ‘Mostly because in Spanish Diablo means devil’. There having a crazy time! I love how they made it more exciting! At first Jack’s sister thought there were going to sleep in the pen. Then “Snake Eyes knew her secret,” Snake eyes is the girl that works for Alonzo while he’s in jail and Jack’s sister’s secret is she hates dirt! I like this part because of the horse, Diablo. I just knew something exciting was coming up! But I don’t like it because it also sounds like something exciting but bad is going to happen! I know what you’re thinking! Will they die? Are they going to get hurt? Don’t ask me! You have to read to find out what happens!

I like this book because it’s exciting and adventurous. Mostly because I like adventure. I mean in this book it said tons of things like, “Better watch it! Diablo only likes me,” I knew that if Diablo likes the bad guys then the good guys are in some trouble!

I don’t like this book because there’s of course. The bad guys. Not to get bossy or anything but the problem is veg. I can’t tell you what it is but because of one little ‘item’ the whole problem goes into killing the kids. I know there suppose to be bad guys. But there reason for being bad is well…. Kind of weird I would say!

Paolini, Christopher. Eragon. New York: Random House Children’s Books, 2003.
I’m Madison and I’m reading Eragon. I have already seen the movie, but I have not read the book. It is a fantasy / fiction about a boy named Eragon who is poor. He is always listening to stories with his friends. His favorite is the one about the Dragon Riders. They fly on Dragons and fight bad guys. But, his not always listening to stories sometimes he goes out to hunt for his families’ food. He goes into the ‘Spine’ to hunt a deer, but instead he finds a sapphire blue stone. He wishes to trade it for meat, but the butcher won’t trade anything that came out of the Spine. He yells at Eragon,”I won’t deal with anything you bring back from those (bad word) mountains! Take your sorcerer’s stone elsewhere!” You can tell it wasn’t pretty. Until Horst (his friend) helped him out. It was nice of him to do so. Eragon sure was happy he jumped in. Later, while going into a merchant’s tent to check out the blue stone. Eragon found out it was hollow. Later that night, Eragon found out more mysteries about the stone. Like for one it wasn’t a stone. It was a dragon! He gave it the name, Sapphira.

I really like the part where Eragon finds out what it really is, “Another squeak filled the air, and he started violently.” Also here’s the weird part! “Suddenly a crack appeared on the stone. Then another and another. Transfixed, Eragon lend forward, still holding the knife.” Then it cracked open into a dragon!
I don’t like the part where the butcher yells at Eragon. First Eragon screams, “You refuse to sell to me!” The Butcher screams, “Yes! Unless you pay me with coins!” It was B.A.D.!

Banim, Lisa. In The Doghouse. New York: Disney Enterprises, 2005.

This book is a mystery book about a girl named Lizzie McGuire who is in the “Doggy Day Care” to get money to donate to an animal shelter. Then get a “Hillridge Community Helper Award” for 1,000 dollars and a pretty good mark on her permanent records. She gets the idea to try it out, after this little chat they had over one thousand dollars. ‘Lizzie sighed. “And, aren’t there some sort of prizes involved?” “ Yeah,” Said Gordo. “The mayor’s office will be giving one thousand dollars to the student who wins the Hillridge Community Helper Award. Plus, you get a certificate and dinner for your family at the mayor’s mansion.’ You can tell after that chat Lizzie was ready for it. I mean, I would be for it to. $$$ ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS $$$. It was a BIG deal. They choose to start a Doggy Day Care Business after another show came up sponsoring to help. Later in the cafeteria Lizzie told everyone her idea. But Kate Sanders, the popular girl ‘who is not as popular as she thinks’, got tired of Lizzie getting all the attention and claps. She stood up and said, ‘“Vice Principle Putney?” she called, giving him a big cheer leader wave. “I have a community service project, too!” Vice Principle Putney beamed. “Wonderful!” he said. “And what is your project, Ms. Sanders?” “Well…” Kate looked around the cafeteria and smiled, stalling for time. Lizzie could tell that she was trying to think fast. “My friends and I are going to run a fund – raising drive for the cheerleading squad, so we can finally buy new pom – poms. For a ten – buck donation, we’ll use a yearbook design facilities to place anyone’s photo over a picture of a Hillridge cheerleader uniform. Then all the photos will be displayed on our special ‘Now even YOU can be a cheerleader’ booster board! How cool is that?” It was pretty obvious that Kate expected the whole place to erupt with excitement , and her fellow cheerleaders did cheer enthusiastically.’ I guess Kate is going to have some trouble with customers and Lizzie is soon going to the dogs!
I think that Kate’s idea was, we’ll…. pretty much her idea to me, was dumb. Because I rather save a real live dog then pom-poms! To me live things are more important. Plus, who care about stupid pom-poms when you could rather have a doggy. Right?
I like the idea of Lizzie being able to win one thousand dollars. Kate is so mean. She doesn’t deserve to win it. I think I mostly liked the drama and all the cheering and clapping for Lizzie. Tell you the truth. I expected the word pom-poms to soon come out of Kate’s mouth.

It's preety good so I'm going to call it an 8 - 10 on the scale. But it's not very long. If you want a long good book. Try reading Eragon. It's 503 pages long! But it's a GOOD book. I bet you'll like it. It's about a boy who finds a stone in a huanted forest and.... well you'll have to read more to find out what comes next!

Paolini, Christopher. Eldest. New York: Random House Children’s Books, 2005.
Genre: Fantasy
I’m reading a great book called, Eldest! It’s the sequel to Eragon. The summary for Eragon is…. It’s about a boy who finds a dragon egg and when it hatches they go on adventures together. Finding dwarfs, shades, and killing bad guys. Not to mention there is a BIG secret about Brom and how he knows all those magic words has a sword, and other weird things. Later he goes to the dwarf city with a group called the Varden. They fight the evil king and try to stop his misery. Good thing the king doesn’t know about them! Then an elf gets into Eragon’s head and tells him to go to an elf city with an elf he met. He finds out the elves don’t fight like the Varden, but they still hate the king. The king didn’t even know elves existed until he found one! Then, in Eldest the one I’m reading. Eragon wants to go to the elf city. As more bad things happen, more bad things happen to him! While things are happening to him, his old home is itself getting hurt too, and his cozen has to save them all…
I really don’t like how even though Eragons cozen did nothing the people are blaming him for all this. “I didn’t do nothing. I didn’t bring that stone from the spine! It was Eragon!” He thought to himself.”
I do like how Eragon gives a special blessing to a baby girl. Then Saphira gives her a special mark of hope. “What was that?” Said Eragon. “You gave her a future, and I gave her hope,” She said.

Lewis, C.S. Prince Caspian. New York: HarperCollions Children’s Books,1951.
Genre: Fantasy Fiction
I’m reading Prince Caspian. It’s the 4th book in the Chronicles of Narnia and one of my favorites in the series because it’s based on the 2nd book and movie, most of us know, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. It’s about how after Susan lost her magical horn, who calls for help when needed, somehow got lost in the woods. “About a year ago.” Then a half human and half dwarf uses magic to find it and gives it to Prince Caspian because his Uncle knows Prince Caspian is next in line for the thrown, but the Uncle wants HIS son next in line for the thrown… and he would kill Prince Caspian to do it. So Prince Caspian runs away from home with the magical horn. After awhile he is riding his horse and hits a tree. Then dwarfs and fauns and all these talking animals come. So they help him out, give him food, water, and shelter. The fauns even danced with him for a bit. Then they send a dwarf to go out to the ruins of ‘The Golden Age of Narnia.’ He is almost there, but then people steal him and end up sending him there anyway. He’s there and right before they throw him into the water. A horn is blown from far away… As it happens High King Peter, Queen Susan, Prince Edward, and Princess Lucy come out of there world and back into Narnia…

What I like about this book is how the horn made them come back. I know this because the horn was used to make people who needed help get that help. So it brought back the four to help Prince Caspian rule his own land again.
What I don’t like is the Uncle would kill his own nephew to have his son be prince. I know he will try because he killed his own brother to be king. That is not a good reason to be king.

Lewis, C.S. Prince Caspian. New York: HarperCollions Children’s Books,1951.
Genre: Fantasy Fiction
I just finished Prince Caspian... It has been a great story to! The dwarf after hearing the horn a minute later the people try to throw him in the lake... but an arrow comes out of nowhere. Not hitting them, but scaring them. So they dropped the dwarf in the water and ran… Then as the dwarf starts sinking hands come out of nowhere and help him from the water. Then he sees a tall man and a short man, and a tall girl and short girl. He quickly says, “Thanks, and who are you?” After they ask the same question. So fir saving his life, he goes first and tells his story. Then they say that they were in there world just going home when they were pulled back here. They and the dwarf guess it was the horn.. So they set on an adventure to find the king and his horn. Or should I say Susan’s old horn. So there off, later Lucy meets the lion, Aslan. When no one believes Aslan wanted them to go over a mountain instead of down a hill. They go down it and walk for a long time... soon to reach a camp filled with mean men who hate the talking animals. So they run away as fast as they can. Then when they finally are far enough away they say sorry to not listen to Lucy and they all take a rest for the night. Then when Aslan comes again. Instead of believing her like they should have learned last time. They choose to go anyway. Then soon Edwin and Peter agree, but the dwarf and Susan thinks she’s a mean liar. Soon they see Aslan. The dwarf and Susan step away. Sad for there bad treatment to Lucy’s truth and felt even worse when Lucy was polite and didn’t say, “I told you so,” So they stepped forward, said sorry to Lucy. Then stepped closer and said sorry to Aslan. Then out of nowhere, he disappeared. Soon they went on to find the king. But you’ll have to read more of what happens next... it’s too good to say!!
I hate how Susan and the dwarf were being mean to Lucy. Like when the dwarf said, “I care more about sleep then Aslan,” and Susan had sad,” What if I was as bad as Lucy and I stayed here and threatened you all I would sleep alone?”
I did like how the horn had some magic powers that made them come back, as the dwarf had told them. “About a moment earlier I had heard a horn and then out of nowhere you come out and save me, ya did!”

Riordan, Rick. The Sea Of Monsters. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2006.
Genre: Fantasy Fiction

I have just started anew book hat a friend recommended called, The Sea of Monsters. It’s the 2nd book right after The Lightning Thief. It’s about a boy named Percy who is a “half blood” or part human and part “god child”. He is the kid of the God of Water or Poseidon. One night he has a dream that his friend who’s also a “half blood” is running away from an evil shadow. Whispering to himself…. “Have to get away. Have to warn them.” Soon Percy wakes in a flash, and also soon finding out he can’t go back to his “Half Blood Camp” this summer! Because something there has gone wrong, and Percy thinks his dream is part of it. I think you should read this great book… and I need to get back to my reading because the next chapter is called… “I Play Dodge Ball with Cannibals.”
I like this book because it hides secrets that I REALLY want to solve… such as Percy’s dream MIGHT connect with the bad things at “Half Blood Camp”, what is REALLY going on at “Half Blood Camp”, and if the shadow was just a dream or real….
I don’t like how this shadow, if it is real or not, is trying to hurt his friend in his dream… it scares me to think it but, I think “Half Blood Camp” is in BIG trouble. Trouble that I want to keep reading about!

Brittany you really should go back to reading this book series of Narnia! It's fun, exciting, and it send chills up your spine! You can also find the books to listen to at the public library! This series is great, after you hit book #7, "The Last Battle", you'll get chills up your spine and be ready for more to read! I really edvise you to keep reading... the books get worse at the beggining, but at the end it's just amazing! Book #4, Prince Caspian, rocks. My favorite for the most part is the last book... it has people who are TRYING to fake being Aslan to get treatment, then everything goes crazy when they figure out who they really are! You REALLY need to read these books!

P.S. Only 3 1/2 more books for you to read!

Riordan, Rick. The Sea Of Monsters. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2006.
Genre: Fantasy Fiction
2 – 13 – 08
I just hit Chapter Five on The Sea of Monsters. I already told you about the first chapter but THIS is different… after the other players on the other team, in dodge ball, turned into monsters, and Percy’s friend, Tyson, had destroyed most of them… Annabeth came along, also killing the last one, and helping get him back to “Half Blood Camp”. They found out Tyson is a “Magical creature” that I’m not going to say. He also can fight against fire, and helped them kill two giant monsters attacking “Half Blood Camp”. The counselor is fired and lastly… Thalia’s Tree is sort of… dying. A creature from the Underworld, that has lots of poison, that can not be cured in less someone goes to the Underworld and get the formula, Tyson, Annabeth, and Percy want to travel to the Underworld and get it to save the tree.
I don’t like how Thalia’s spirit was poisoned. It was her tree because, this was in the book from Percy’s thoughts, and “During World War 2 Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades “Big Three” pact was made it meant none of them could have children with mortals. But it was broken twice, one was when Zeus sired Thalia, and one when Poseidon sired me. Neither of us should have been born. Thalia had gotten herself turned into a pine tree when she was twelve. Me… well, I was doing my best not to follow her example. I had nightmares about what Poseidon might turn me into if I were on the verge of death—plankton, maybe. Or a floating patch of kelp.”
In the book they said that Tyson was a magical creature… and neither did Percy… “I never expected Tyson to be a “magical Creature”… He seemed like a normal homeless boy until that day. “Percy,” she said, “have you ever looked at Tyson closely? I mean... in the face. Ignore the mist, and really look at him.” The Mist makes humans see only what their brains can process… I knew it could fool demigods too, but… I looked at Tyson in the face. It wasn’t easy. I’d always had trouble looking directly at him, though I’d never quite understood why. I’d thought it was just because he always had peanut butter in his crooked teeth.” - Madison

Riordan, Rick. The Titan’s Curse. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 2006.
3 – 4 – 08 - Fantasy Fiction
I’m reading the Titan’s Curse; so far Thalia has come out of the tree and befriended them. You my think it starts where it left off…. It doesn’t. It starts a few months after she came back out of the tree. First, they hear news that two new half – bloods are found, then on there adventure for the half – bloods... they meet The Hunters. A group of teen girls who are immortal. The rule is you can join and be immortal, as long as you never show your love to a boy, you need to be a half – blood, and you need to be a teen ager and NO boys aloud. One of the two half – bloods agree to join The Hunters and there leader, A goddess. Soon there god leader went on a one Hunter quest. Then got stolen… now there on an adventure to find her!
I like how the Hunters are a girl’s only club. “You must forgive my Hunters if they do not welcome you.” Artemis said. “It is very rare that we have boys in this camp. Boys are usually forbidden to have contact with the Hunters. The last one to see this camp…” She looked at Zoe. “Which one was it?” “That boy in Colorado,” Zoe said. “You turned him into a jackalope.”
I don’t like how a GODDESS was stolen. Zoe said, “How are we going to take orders from Artemis if Artemis is lost?” “What do you mean lost? Like she needs directions?” I asked. “No. Think she meant Taken. Kidnapped.” Grover said. “Kidnapped?” I tried to get my mind around that idea.
