David D.

Hi, my name is David. My favorite types of books are books that put you on the edge of your seat, like mysteries. I also like to read funny fiction books, for example, Captain Underpants is a funny book that is fiction. I dislike books that are hard to get started on. I also dislike books that are really, really long. I am not a fan of Harry Potter books either.

My favorite book of all time is Abduction by Peg Kheret. This my favorite book because it puts you on the edge of your seat, (more like throws you off of your seat), and you can’t stop reading it. It is a big adventure.

My goals as a reader this year are finishing books, reading books on the Mark Twain list, and picking books that interest me. I am also looking forward to getting into reading challenge. Thanks, for reading this and I hope you liked it, bye!

Smith, Roland: New York, Hyperion Books for Children, 2005
After Marty and Grace’s parents are lost in a fiery helicopter crash, they are sent to live on Cryptos Island with an uncle they didn’t even know they had! Read this Great fiction chapter book about what Marty and Grace do to survive on an Island full of cryptids!
I liked this book because it keeps you stuck to it when you are reading, like when Marty and grace fall 18,000 feet out of an airplane in to a lake full of hungry alligators!
I also like the part when Marty is drowning in a lake with sharks thought to be in it.

I'm reading the same book. I'm not very far in it, but so far it's AWESOME! I loved how Marty thought the chimp was bigfoot! He was so scared he dived into the water. Then thinking there are sharks in the water! Man, it was great! I am almost in love with this book! - Tell me when you finish!

I LOVE Cryptid Hunters! It’s one of the best books by Roland Smith. He’s going to be coming to our school this year. You probably knew that already, though. If you’re reading that book because of the Mark Twain nominee list, then I can relate. I’m currently reading Shakespeare’s Secret, a great mystery. I have only been reading it for three days, and I’m on page 133, and it’s not even the end of the day! Did you know Roland Smith has a new book out called Peak? I can’t wait to read it! Do you like Roland Smith too?

Yes, David i have read Abduction. My favorit part was when the dad came and got the little boy by conning him into it. I wish i could read it again, but i am already reading Ghosts of Fear Street, By R.L. Stine. it is an Goose Bumps Book. I love to read Mark Twain books. My favorit year of Mark twain was last years. Why I liked it so much is because it had Old Willis Place, that was another of my favorit books, and they had Abduction. Abduction and Old Willis Place are hard to choose from. I would, It is to hard to choose. I am going to say they are as good as the other. Do you like Mark Twain?

I think that at the end of Abduction is cool too I also thought that how you talked about it was awesome. Also since you said that you like books that put you on the edge of your set then I think you should read the Spider Wick chronicles because they really put you on the edge of your set. I think that yesterday in class I saw you reading Cryptid Hunters I really am getting into that book!!

Smith, Roland. Cryptid Hunters. New York: Hyperion Books for children, 2005.
Marty and Grace are now forced to walk through the Congo and to a tree house called Sky house. As they walk through the Congo they have to face challenges and get there way through obstacles, while being stalked by a very dangerous man named Butch Mcall. Butch’s mission is to kidnap Grace. Once Grace and Marty find the sky house they have to climb up a tree to get in it. When they climb up into sky house they are surrounded by bats! Then they feel something slithering around their feet… It ‘s a snake! Read this great book to find out what happens!
My favorite part during this part of the book is when Grace and Marty finally reach sky house and have to climb up the metal ladder in the rain up a high tree while it is lightning.
I also liked the part where they have to fight through bats while it is pitch black.

Clements, Andrew. Lunch Money. New York: Aladdin ,2005.
Greg Kenton loves money! He loves to count it, to save it, to spend it, to earn it, he loves every thing about it! However, when he finds a way to make more money at school, his annoying neighbor, Maura Shaw copies his idea. Read this realistic fiction book to see what Greg does to stop Maura from making money off of his idea.
One thing I don’t like in this book is when Maura steals Greg’s idea.
I also don’t like when Maura starts to make more money than Greg. I don’t like this part because it was Greg’s idea first.

Clements, Andrew. Lunch Money. New York: Aladdin Paper backs, 2005.
After Greg gets caught by the teachers selling toys, Greg finds a better way to sell things that are okay for school. He chose to make his own comic books business, Chunky comics. Chunky comics has been selling pretty well for the first issue. However, when Greg’s friend hands him a little comic book, it’s not his! When Greg sees it, he knows just who’s it is, Maura Shaw’s! Maura has been copying Greg ever since she has seen him! Read this realistic fiction book to find out what happens next!

One thing I like about this part is how the teachers describe what the kids were doing with the toys Greg sold them. For example, when the janitor explained how the gooey spiders were leaving oily marks on the window from when the kids stuck them on there.

I don’t like when Maura copies Greg’s idea.

Sachar, Louis. Holes. New York: Schoolastic,1998
Genre: Realistic fiction
Stanley Yelnats has been sent off to Camp Green Lake for 18 months. He was going to Camp Green Lake because he “stole” a pare of Clive Livingston’s Shoes. Or, I guess you could say he went because of his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig stealing-great-great-grandfather. While Stanley is at camp he sees holes in the ground every where! He sees kids in orange jump suits digging in the holes. He later finds him self digging too. Stanley is forced to dig holes that are exactly five feet deep and five feet in diameter. Read this GREAT book about how Stanley and his best friend, “Zero”, become rich!

What I like so far about this book is, how Stanley and “Zero” have so much in common, for example, Stanley’s great-great grandfather was great friends with “Zero’s” great-great-great Grandmother.

I also like when Stanley gets introduced to X-ray, Squid, Zig-Zag, Zero, Armpit, and Magnet. I liked this part because I liked to hear all of there nick names and here why they were nick named that.

Hey David, I like mysteries too. The best mystery book I've ever read is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I think you should read this book because like you said you like books on the edge of your seat. And if you read this book you will be on the edge of your seat. But you probably won't read it because you said on your intro that didn't like long books. Also I liked when described that that Greg loves money. I thought it was funny when he liked to count it, spend it, save it, and earn it because me and him are just the same. Post back on my comments to tell me more about it or do more posts. Happy Reading!!!

Sachar, Louis. Small steps. New York: Delacorte Press, 2006.
Genre: Realistic fiction
Three years after digging holes in camp green lake, Armpit is now digging holes for a landscaping business. Then one day when he was working, his friend from camp green lake, X-Ray, drove up to Armpit and asked Armpit if he wanted to make money faster. Armpit shrugged. The last time Armpit listened to X-Ray, he almost ended up in jail for selling fake marijuana. Do you think Armpit will listen to X-Ray this time? Read this great book to find out!

One thing that I thought was funny in this part of the book is how Armpit is digging holes again, but this time, to make money. I thought this was funny because, he dug holes at camp green lake, and now digging is his job.

One thing I don’t like about this part in the book is how X-Ray keeps trying to talk Armpit into making more money.
I don’t like this part because last time X-Ray talked Armpit into making more money, they almost went to jail.

DuPrau, Jeanne. City of Ember. New York: Random House children’s books, 2003.

Genre: Science fiction

In the dark city of Ember, you are assigned jobs at age 12. This day is called assignment day. So when assignment day came for Lina Mayfleet’s class, excitement floated around wildly in the students’ minds. Lina was hoping to get the job, messenger. But when sh e was assigned Pipeworks laborer she was extremely disappointed. Then when her classmate, Doon, gets assigned messenger, he crumples the paper that lists his job and throws it on the floor! Later this day Doon asks Lina to secretly trade jobs! Will Lina trade with Doon? Read this great book to find out what happens next!

My favorite part in this section of the book is when Doon asks Lina to trade jobs. I like this part because it was so suspenseful.

I also liked when Doon threw his paper down and shouted. I liked this part because it was funny.

DuPrau Jeanne. City ofEmber. New York: Random House Childrens books, 2003.
Genre: Science fiction
When Lina comes home from work one day, she finds her Grandma digging in the closet looking for something. Lina’s Grandma tells Lina that she is looking for something that her Grandma’s Grandpa left behind when he was Mayor. She doesn’t know exactly what is, but she will when she finds it, (at least that is what she says). When Lina backs out of the closet, she sees a box with an open latch on it. Next to the box lays Lina’s little sister, Poppy, who is chewing on the document that came from the box. When Lina takes the document away from Poppy, she takes it to her room and studies it. She can’t understand the ripped up words, but she can make out one word. It seems to be, “ Instructions”. Could this paper be important instructions to the City of Embers survival?! Read this GREAT book to find out what happends next!

I really liked when Lina found the uknown document in the unlatched case. I liked this because it was really suspenseful to see what it could be.

What I didn’t like was when Poppy chewed up the paper. I didn’t like this because now Lina can’t read it!

DuPrau, Jeanne. City of Ember. New York: Random House children’s books, 2003.

Genre: Science fiction

When Doon explores the pipe works, he finds a hidden door that is locked. Doon thinks it is no big deal, until Lina tells him that she figured out part of the document she found. The document seems to say “Instructions” for something in the “Pipe works” where a “door” is located. When Doon hears this he shows Lina the hidden door he found. When Doon and Lina sneak away from the secret door, they here a key open the door! Then a ……….. wait, I can’t tell you everything, you’ll just have to read this to find out!

What I liked about this part of the book is when Lina and Doon find the door together, then something opens the door. I liked this because it was very suspenseful .

What I didn’t like about this part was how the door was locked, because I really wanted to see what the door led to.
